“Something is visually interesting if it holds our attention and demands some degree of conscious contemplation or consideration.“
-Ming Thein
How many times have you seen a photograph that evokes strong emotions and you haven't been able to figure out why?
All elements in a photograph can trigger emotions in a person, but there are many factors at play that arouse reactions within the audience. Photographic techniques are often used purposefully to challenge the viewer to contemplate the meaning of the image.
There are many ways lighting can evoke certain emotions in an audience. For example a photo using increased light exposure is often designed to show speed or to accentuate colour, which invokes emotions of exhilaration or joyfulness. The angles, shadows and silhouettes created by light spur different feelings within the audience.

Perspective of the subject plays an important role in the reception of an image. If the subject is placed directly in front of or looking directly at the audience, the audience feels more addressed or perhaps intimidated.
When searching "emotional photography" on Google, curious as to what would appear, the first four rows of photos displayed predominantly extreme emotion such as sadness or happiness. Interestingly, these photos were displayed in monochrome. It would seem that black and white is commonly used to convey emotions of grief or sadness. Additionally it included people, more often children, as the main subject. This alludes to the fact children are more likely to evoke an emotional response in an audience.
Popular images often consist of one dominant colour making the photo aesthetically pleasing for an audience.
Naturally people are always going to connect more readily with subjects that are relatable, subjects that can trigger memories. When the photograph “hits close to home” or relates to personal experiences, strong emotions come from it. For example, dancers may admire dance photography whereas a fashion enthusiast may feel inspired by a good outfit.
